Converting Flash-based SCORM Modules to Alternate formats
Last modified on 30 November 2022 03:55 PM

With Adobe Flash's end of life (December 31, 2020), interactive learning objects such as SCORM modules, if based on Flash, will stop functioning in most browsers at that time. eClass users with any SCORM activity that is Flash-based will need to convert their learning objects from Flash to HTML5 or to re-author their content in HTML5 content.

Basically, the SCORM activity in eClass will continue to work as long as it is not Flash-based.

Suggestions for converting from Flash to HTML5

  • When authoring SCORM activities, most authoring softwares have an option to save as the HTML5 instead of Flash. The process for doing this will be dependent on the specific software you are using, for example, modern versions of Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline.
  • If existing learning objects have been deployed into a course in a flash format, they can be replaced with the HTML5 outputs by going back into the native project files in the authoring software (Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, etc) and exporting a new version.
  • If you are unable to locate the original project files, i.e. your own hard drive, department data stores, colleagues, past employees, etc, you may need to rebuild your SCORM activities from scratch. One potential option for doing this is using H5P - a native HTML5 authoring tool with easy integrations into eClass.
  • Some SCORM activities may not require full conversion to HTML5, for example video-only learning objects without student engagement components could be converted using video capture software into an acceptable format.
