Using Canvas (For Students)

Canvas can be accessed at https://canvas.ualberta.ca. Users can also check their browser compatibility and other details on Accessing Canvas Courses.

You will need into the system with your CCID and password. If you don't see your course there, it may not yet have been opened for student access. Students can also view their upcoming courses (courses that they are enrolled in but which have not yet opened for students by going to the left nav, clicking Courses, then All courses, then viewing their Future Enrollments. By default Canvas courses are scheduled to open on the first scheduled day of in-person classes but your instructor may change this date.

Using the Canvas Dashboard

On your Dashboard, your active courses will appear as tiles:

You can modify a course tile to change its colour. You can also give your course a nickname to make it easier to find. Your nickname will affect only your view of the tile:

On the right side of your screen, you will see a link to your current calendar items and your To Do list:

You can also change your Dashboard to display your courses as a list or by recent activity. You can also remove the colour overlay from your course tiles.

Global Navigation

On the left side of the page, you will find the global navigation bar that appears even while you are inside courses:

From here, you can navigate back to your Dashboard, the list of all Courses, your Canvas Calendar, message Inbox, and a link to important Resources you may require. Tools like the Calendar and Inbox contain items from all your courses.

To navigate quickly between courses, you can click on the Courses link and select different courses to access without going back to the Dashboard.

Navigating Within Courses

Once you click on a tile to open a course, you will have an additional course navigation menu to the right of the global navigation menu:

Items in this menu will depend upon your instructor's preferences.

Use the Modules link to find visible assignments, quizzes, exams, course pages, and discussions. Your instructor may choose to make other links available (e.g., Assignments) where you will find other activities to complete. Click on any module item ot open it.

If your instructor has used the U of A's custom-designed template for their course, you will also find some buttons linking to other parts of the course:

Submitting Assignments in Canvas

Canvas assignment submissions allow file uploads or online text submissions depending on the configuration. Students should note that assignments are not completely submitted until the button at the bottom right is clicked:

Warning: students sometimes encounter errors when accessing assignments if they have left the Canvas assignment page open in a tab for several days so that it becomes stale/inactive. This can be resolved by refreshing the browser page.

This button opens a page overlay that provides context-sensitive information based on the user's current location in Canvas and tailored to their specific role. Users can browse the suggested topics or search the support center for specific topics which pulls in knowledge articles from both the eClass and Canvas support portals. For U of A specific materials, users can select the U of A category:

Key Changes in Canvas

This article contains known differences between eClass and Canvas that instructors should take note of when transitioning to the new LMS. It is a living document that will grow over time. Users are encouraged to contact eclass@ualberta.ca to suggest any additions to this page. Instructors should also review the Canvas Known Issues list that identifies any specific functional problems we have identified in Canvas and reported to the vendor.

From our experience in Wave 1 of the transition (Fall 2024), the changes users found most impactful were:

Differences in the Canvas gradebook (summarized below and discussed in detail here)
The way groups can now only be used for actual group work or grouped assignments

General Features

Maximum of twenty courses displayed	The Canvas Dashboard can only display up to twenty courses and will not show new enrollments.	Utilize 'Favoriting' courses from the All Courses list.
No setting available to hide/show courses	In Canvas, there is no course visibility setting. The course Publish/Unpublish option is similar but courses CANNOT be unpublished once any student submission has been graded.	Student visibility to courses is controlled by the Participation > Course > Dates options in the course settings. All Bear Tracks credit courses are created by default in a published state but hidden from students until the specified date. In eClass, all Bear Tracks credit courses are created in a hidden state until the specified date.

Group Member Visibility	It is not possible to use groups as organizational units and NOT have students see all the other members of their group.	No workaround is available at this time. Groups in Canvas should only be used for actual group assignments and projects.
H5P cannot be direct-hosted	Unlike eClass, Canvas does not natively support H5P direct uploads. To use H5P in Canvas, users must pay to have their content files hosted at H5P.com.	This difference has been identified to the LMS transition project team and they are evaluating options. It is also possible to use Lumi to convert h5p into SCORM.
No Dark Mode for desktop	There is no Dark Mode or Dark Theme setting available on Canvas.	Users may need to see other methods for mimicking dark mode on their devices and/or consult with the Academic Success Center at the University for tips and practices. Dark mode is available on the Canvas mobile app.
No activity completion report	Canvas does not have a convenient report that matches eClass' Activity Completion report that provides data on the progress of all students in a course.	It is possible to view the completion progress of individual students in Canvas.

Gradebook

Key Difference	Summary	Workarounds
Entered grades are automatically visible	By default when student grades are entered, they are automatically posted and visible to students.	Instructors should change the Grade posting policy in their course gradebook so they can manually post grades.
Text cannot be uploaded into the gradebook	It is not possible to import text columns from a spreadsheet into the Canvas gradebook such as wrong answers columns in TSQS ScanTron results.	No workaround is available at this time.
Grade weightings	Basic grade calculations use the maximum grade of all assignments out of the total (similar to the "Simple weighted mean of grades" aggregation method in eClass.)	To achieve the eClass "Weighted mean of grades" calculation method, instructors must add/edit assignment groups and weight each group separately. Each assignment in the group can be out of any value which will be its contribution to the total, but the overall group itself can only have a single weighting.
Empty grades vs zero grades	There is no setting to include or exclude empty grade items from calculations: these are ALWAYS excluded. Instructors will need to take note of this when reviewing assignment grades and calculating course total grades.	Instructors can leverage the option to mass convert missing grades to zeros.
Manual Grade Columns	It is not possible add new columns directly in the gradebook - these are created by adding Assignments with the submission set to none.	No workaround is available at this time.
Grade Calculations	It is not possible to perform calculations on Canvas grade items as it was in eClass apart from dropping the lowest value from an Assignment group.	None. Users performing complex algebra to compute grades must now complete this in a spreadsheet and upload scores back into the LMS.
No activity completion report	Canvas does not have a convenient report that matches eClass' Activity Completion report that provides data on the progress of all students in a course.	It is possible to view the completion progress of individual students in Canvas.

Discussions

Forced Subscription for discussions is not possible	In Canvas, unlike eClass, there is no option to force students to keep their email notifications on for specific forums, including the course announcements forum.	None at this time. Communicating with students that they are required to keep the announcement forum email notifications turned on in courses.
Discussion forums consist of a single topic	In Canvas it is not possible to have multiple, top-level topics within the same Discussion.	Instructors will need to add separate Discussions for different topics with clear instructions for students about the intended function of the activity (focused vs threaded.)
No visible groups in discussion forums	In group forums, there is no functionality that allows students to see other group's discussions but not reply to them.	The only alternative is to have separate discussions for groups and the entire class.

Assignments and Quizzes

Unpublishing with Submissions	Canvas does not allow instructors to unpublish assignments or quizzes that contain student submissions.	Instructors can use the 'Assign to' date settings options to remove student access if required.
Variables in Formula questions may not be reused in other questions	In Canvas, generated variables reside only with that question.	No workaround is available at this time.
Quiz Academic Dishonesty Statement	There is no similar setting in Canvas.	Instructors can add blanket academic honesty statements to their course details or in the descriptions of specific quizzes.
Quiz Cross-out	There is no option for students to cross out distracting answers in MC quiz questions.	No workaround is available at this time.
Quiz adaptive mode	Providing students with homework quizzes where they can re-try questions within quizzes as many times as they want is not possible.	It is possible to allow students to re-take entire quizzes as many times as they want. It is also possible to have multiple attempts build on each other (but when doing this, any questions that are correct will not be displayed in subsequent attempts.) Any late penalties will be applied to all a student's attempts on a quiz.
Units in formula questions	Calculated formula questions do not provide the option for students to select units.	Unit options can be added as question answers in other question types.
Text headings in New Quizzes	There is no option to have free form text headings to break up questions in New Quizzes.	This feature is on the Canvas New Quiz roadmap for early 2025.

Other Tools

Built-in syllabus tool activity list cannot be removed	By default, any graded assessment items with a due date in a course will display automatically as a list on the course syllabus (whether they are a part of a course total calculation or not.) At present, basic PDF Syllabus files are recommended.	.Work is underway to integrate an external syllabus tool with Canvas so the recommendation for now is to create syllabi as text files (pdf, ms word) just like in eClass and upload into the course as a linked file.
No Badges	There is no built-in functionality to provide gamification badges within courses.	Alternatives are being investigated.
H5P cannot be direct-hosted	Unlike eClass, Canvas does not natively support H5P direct uploads. To use H5P in Canvas, users must pay to have their content files hosted at H5P.com.	This difference has been identified to the LMS transition project team and they are evaluating options. It is also possible to use Lumi to convert h5p into SCORM.
Certificate activity	There is no native certificate activity in Canvas that pulls student profile information to automatically generate an indication of course completion.	It is possible to provide a generic course certificate in a module that require completion of other modules and/or require achieving specific scores on assignments or quizzes. Alternatives are being evaluated.

Canvas Known Issues

This article lists the current known issues and technical problems in Canvas that have already been identified and/or reported to the Canvas Known Issues list.

True/False questions showing in English in course with French language set	True/False responses in questions for quizzes will display in English rather than Vrai ou Faux.	User personal settings will change this to French if set in profile. Otherwise, it will display in English if left to default.
Canvas Portfolios Error	When users click the Postfolios tool link from the user account menu, they will encounter an error message the "Authentication failed."	None. This issue has been reported to Canvas.
Student Accommodation Dashboard no longer shows student exam details	The Student Accommodation Dashboard now displays a direct link to the Accommodate system instead of listing student exam m=information.	Instructors can access their student exam accommodation information directly in Accommodate. This change is by design and has been made to address issues with data consistency.
'Access Denied' when students try to review quiz submissions.	Students may currently experience a problem when attempting to review completed quiz attempts. When they click the ‘Submission Details’ link, they encounter an ‘Access denied’ error. This issue has been reported to Instructure - their engineers have identified the problem and are currently working on a solution.	- Removing the 'Until' date/time in the Assign-to settings for the quiz will grant students access to view their results. However, this will also open the quiz to students who have not attempted the quiz. - If numbers are manageable, you can remove the 'Until' date/time, and assign it exclusively to students/tags who have completed the quiz. This issue has been resolved by Canvas.
Events from unpublished courses will appear in .ics calendar exports	If importing your Canvas calendar (i.e. to Google Calendar) via .ics file, you will see all events including those from unpublished courses.	Instructure has acknowledged this as functioning as intended.
Canvas Studio videos embedded in Item Banks may not load in some quiz questions.	If a Canvas Studio video is embedded in an Item Bank question, browsers may return an error stating that login.ualberta.ca will refuse to display the video. Opening the video in a new window has no effect. Tested with cleared browser caches and third-party tracking cookies enabled.	At this time instructors are advised to use Yuja to embed videos into item bank questions. This issue has been reported to Canvas Support.
Quiz presentation appears to skip questions (students / instructors)	If topic sections (Stimulus) is used in a quiz, it will present as a nested frame (frame within a frame) that users scroll through. If scrolling fast enough, the active frame may change to the outer frame instead and appear to skip the contents in the nested frame.	House fewer questions within the Stimulus. If questions are not shuffled, replace Stimulus with Text Block. If Stimulus objects are required, communication to students about the potential issue will be necessary as well.
Inflated numbers in People section when using the Select All toggle.	When using the Select All toggle, Canvas will display greater numbers than there are enrolled users in the course. Student count is multiplied by the number of other sections they appear in. Included in the selection are "View as student" profiles as well as non-Teacher enrollments.	None. This entry is informational. Intended design by Instructure.
Cannot save a page that is linked from template. Gets error message about a page issue.	A University Canvas template may refer to a deleted page, i.e. Syllabus. When clicking on it, users are directed to a page with a long text string as the title. As well, an error message served indicating a page resource issue. Users may be inclined to rename and try to save new content in this page but may still experience the issue.	From the template main page, remove any offending links and re-add them manually. (Guide)
Cannot download or bulk download media recording submissions	Assignments set to accept Media Recordings as the Online Entry Option cannot be downloaded by the instructor.	Students can resubmit to another assignment that uses only the File Uploads online entry option.
Users with a Designer role are unable to see the courses on their list	Designers will not be able to see a course if it is not published or not visible from time restrictions.	Access is possible if URL is given to users with a Designer role.
Event and Due Dates may not be automatically adjusted or shifted after course is imported (or copied during course creation)	Canvas has an option to adjust due dates and shift calendar dates/times on importing content from another course. This bulk function is not compatible if the source item is not the default Assign-To option, 'Everyone'.	Canvas functional limitation. Manual updates would be required. Feature request has been submitted to the vendor.
Assign2 displays in frame, compressed and hard to use.	If Assign2 is not set to launch in a new tab/window from the External tool settings, it will try to force the entirety of Assign2 within the Canvas window/page/module.	As per the knowledge article, be sure to toggle the setting to allow it to launch in a new tab/window.
HTML editor strips/obfuscates notation in content	When entering mathematical notation directly into the RCE, i.e. MathJax, switching into the html view and saving the page with the 'pretty html' option selected breaks the equations originally entered.	This issue has been reported to the vendor and placed on their backlog. Users can switch the HTML editor to the 'raw' view as the issue only appears to affect the 'pretty' html view. It is also possible to enter mathematical symbols and equations using the RCE equation editor.
400 Error when trying to upload content into course	Instructors will experience a 400 error message when trying to upload any content to their course. This is due to the course being over storage quota, 2 GB hard limit. This error also occurs when trying to upload a file that exceeds available quota space.	Delete any extraneous imported files, duplicates, etc from the course Files area. If uploading videos, be sure to use Yuja (or Canvas Studio) instead. Users can check their current storage usage by navigating to their course settings: Settings > Course Statistics (right menu pane) > File Storage (tab)
Hotspot quiz questions do not save student responses	If a student attempting a quiz that has a hotspot question, their response will be reset if they navigate away from the question or the quiz	The only way to avoid this affecting students is to enable "one question at a time" in the quiz settings and disallow backtracking. Canvas has resolved this issue.
Instructors cannot delete assignment submissions on behalf of students	Instructors are able to submit assignments on behalf of students, but cannot remove the submissions themselves.	Contact eClass - Canvas is aware of issue and is being tracked (here).
Unable to preview quiz questions individually without loading entire quiz	Canvas is currently only restricted to previewing/testing questions with the entire quiz.	Order question desired as first question separated by its own page, and preview the quiz to test the question.
Quiz preview spins and does not load with IP restrictions in effect	When a quiz is set with IP restrictions, and it is previewed while outside of the set IP range, it will not load, nor yield any error messages indicating so.	Options: Test within the IP restriction Remove the IP restriction
Issues re-admitting students to quizzes after they've run out of time	Currently if you reopen a quiz attempt from the 'moderate' screen in a new quiz, there is no option to specify the time allowed so it will default to giving the student the full time limit set in the quiz settings. Additionally, if a quiz is reopened this way, there is an additional bug that prevents the student from seeing the quiz timer.	There are no workarounds at this time. Canvas is aware of the issue and is working towards a fix. Enabling additional attempts with "Build on Last Attempt" is not recommended in most situations as this will hide any automatically-graded questions that the student has answered correctly. This issue has been resolved.
Latest version of quiz questions not transferred in manual migrations	When manually migrating quizzes and questions from eClass to Canvas, the import process is only picking up the first version of questions, not the latest version.	This issue has been reported to Canvas. Instructors can perform an export and import of questions within eClass to 'flatten' the question's versions (See point #4 on this list). This does not affect quizzes and questions migrated through K16.
Quizzes and other items aren't available to students if they reside in an unpublished module	A quiz, assignment, page, or other item can appear published on the assignments page but if it has been added to a module that isn't published to students, they won't be able to access it even with a direct link. This can block access for an SEM quiz or course page for example	Either publish the module the content resides in or remove the content from the modules page entirely. The Canvas instructor guide has detailed instructions to publish individual items or entire modules.
Images on the site (or in quizzes) appear as a 'lock' icon for students	Lock icons indicate that the content hasn't been 'published' and isn't available to students.	The files must appear as published (have a green checkmark) in the files area of the course. Note that permissions cascade from the folder that files reside in- meaning that a file may appear to be published, but if the folder it resides in is not published, the images will not appear when embedded. (the setting "only available with link" Will not work for embedding an individual file either) Users may try looking for files default upload folders in the course, i.e. 'Uploaded Media' and either move the file to a published folder, or publish the default folder in relation.
Images in new quiz questions sometimes do not display	If questions have been created in an item bank in one course and then copied to another, the images sometimes do not display.	Canvas implemented a fix for this in November 2024 and we are working with the vendor on this issue to understand why the issue is persisting, the scope of the problem, and the steps for resolutions.
Sharing changes when copying course item banks	Courses that are copied containing item banks shared with them at the 'Edit' permission level will only have 'View' permissions in the copied course.	This issue has been reported to Canvas. Instructors can follow the steps here to manually adjust the item bank sharing.
New quiz titles do not update	Any edits made to the title of an existing new quiz directly on a module page or in the quiz's Assignment Name field will not be reflected in the title of the quiz on the Build page and vice-versa.	The title of the quiz on the Build page must be updated manually. Canvas is aware of this issue.
New analytics does not load in very large courses	In courses that have a combination of a high number of assignment groups and students New Analytics will not load.	Canvas is working on a fix for this issue.
Incorrect timestamps on downloaded assignment files	When bulk downloading submitted student assignment files, the file timestamps are offset by 6 hours.	Canvas is aware of this issue.
Grades do not push from Assign2	There are two things that can prevent assign2 from pushing grades: - "update users from LMS" has not been pressed in the student roster screen - The Canvas assignment settings have a limited number of attempts, which will prevent instructors from pushing grades more than once.	Both issues and their solutions are detailed in our KB article about using Assign2 with Canvas
Toggling between Participation options in settings clears access dates	In a courses' settings, switching the participation dropdown from Course to Term will overwrite the course dates (set during the course request process) with the default term dates (which are pulled from Bear Tracks and not editable); switching back does not restore these dates.	This issue has been reported to Canvas. If an instructor makes this toggle and cannot recall the specific dates they have set, they can discard the changes on the page (navigate away without clicking Save) and the original dates will return.
Random variables do not display in Formula questions in quizzes.	If a variable is entered as part of a (LaTeX, etc) equation, the question is unable to properly display the variable in the question.	None at this time.
Annotated PDFs of Group Submissions missing annotations when downloaded	The issue where some annotations do not appear when exporting or flattening the PDF is also a known limitation in the current Canvas DocViewer/SpeedGrader tool. The annotations are stored as layers, and occasionally, certain markups do not flatten correctly when downloaded. Canvas has ongoing development work to improve DocViewer’s export fidelity, but again no confirmed timeline for a fix.	If feedback needs to be visible to the entire group right now, these options work reliably: 1- Use the Assignment Comment area to attach a separate feedback file (created outside SpeedGrader) or include screenshots of key annotated portions. 2- Or, if appropriate, have one student share their annotated view with the group. 3- For full-group visibility of annotations, some instructors temporarily switch to “Students can only see their own submission” OFF so all group members can review the annotated file together, but this depends on course policy.”
The inventory of all the pages created in a course is not sortable.	Clicking Pages > All pages will display all the pages created in a specific course but the list is available only in an alphabetic sort.	Instructors should take care when naming pages and potentially prepend numbers to force items to the top of the list.
Approved Accommodations dashboard student lists	The Approved Student Accommodation dashboard is currently not showing all student accommodations in courses that contain more than 10 students.	This issue is RESOLVED. Instructors should validate all student accommodation information directly in the ClockWorks Instructor Services Portal until this issues is resolved.

Getting Support for Canvas

During the LMS transition, users have a range of recommended options for finding support for Canvas from in-system contextual guides and direct phone or email support. There are also a wide range of web resources but users should note that not all settings or features described in Canvas' documentation will apply to our specific implementation of Canvas. Users should always start with the U of A specific documentation and contact eClass support if they have questions.

Canvas In-System Support

Instructors and students who have questions while using Canvas should first search for help using the Support callout at the bottom left of the page:

Canvas Community Portal

The Canvas Community portal is a huge resource encompassing guides, video tutorials, and discussion forums. When searching the Canvas portal, users should be aware that it incorporates resources from all of Instructure's products including those that are not available at the U of A. Additionally, the Canvas guides sometimes refer to options or settings that are not enabled or available at the U of A.

As the Community can be a bit overwheming, here are some suggestions:

When searching basic documentation, it can be useful to limit the results' 'Location' to 'Canvas' and 'Type of Post' to 'Knowledge Bases:
Conversely, if you are searching for detailed information or specific solutions to novel problems, setting 'Type of Post' to 'Forums' is a better choice to seek out other community members who have had that type of problem. (Instructions for users who need to comment or post in the community to ask questions or seek clarifications follow below.)
Users who prefer to browse should view the complete Canvas Documentation Guides.
Users who prefer to watch videos can consult the Canvas Video guides.

All U of A Canvas users have the option of creating an account in the Canvas Community. Accounts are only required if users want to post or reply to community forum posts, subscribe to any subject group blogs, or to submit and vote for feature requests. To sign into the Community, first click on Sign In:

If you are not already signed in to Canvas with your CCID, you will be redirected to the U of A central authentication portal where you can enter your CCID and password.

Feature Requests

While transitioning from eClass to Canvas, instructors will undoubtedly encounter workflows, new or different from eClass. With a wide variety of ways that a user can interface with Canvas, here are some steps to get help with problems and determine if a new feature is to be requested:

Search the Canvas In-System Support resources as these contain resources tailored to the University of Alberta, as well Canvas Community resources.
Contact eClass Support and present the issue. Our team will attempt to analyze the issue and provide solutions or workarounds if available. Issues are categorized into one of three streams:
1. Functional difference (Canvas vs eClass): Users are shown how to perform the same task under Canvas. In addition, our user documentation is updated and may be shared with other users.
2. Bug identification: A function of Canvas that does not work purportedly according to documentation and is replicable by our team. These issues are escalated to Instructure (Canvas) Support.
3. No functional equivalent (no alternatives): Functional gaps are brought to the attention of our Campus Success Manager (vendor representative) who will further investigate.
Canvas Community ("Ideas") - If the matter has not been resolved by this point, users can show their support to existing feature suggestions ("Ideas") in the Instructure (Canvas) community portal, or create new "Ideas" identifying the problem. Instructure (Canvas) is currently working on a new and improved process where users may vote on "Ideas" to inform development priority. Users must be signed into the Community Portal in order to participate.

LMS Transition Overview

As has been announced through various communication channels, Canvas will be replacing eClass as the U of A’s centrally supported LMS. This transition will take place over the next 18 months and will conclude with Winter 2025 as the last term that credit courses can be delivered on eClass.

Instructors should ensure they follow all the latest updates released through the LMS transition project's website.

To access Canvas, users can go to https://canvas.ualberta.ca and login using their CCID and password. Instructors with a credit course enrollment on eClass in the last 2 years should find a sandbox course to explore; staff and other users can request additional sandboxes.
