SEM Known Issues

This article lists the current known issues and technical problems in SEM (Smart Exam Monitor) that are currently under investigation or have already been reported to the vendor for repairs.

Issue Summary Known Workarounds

Student's screen recordings show only the top-left quadrant of the screen

Windows computers with a 4K display (3840x2160) will not record the entire screen. To ensure a full recording, students must set their screen resolution before they begin their attempt to 2560x1440 or 1920x1080 by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "display settings", and adjusting the resolution there.

SEM appears to work correctly for student, but instructors report receiving proctoring data showing black screens, and the exam video/screen recording are blank

According to the vendor, this is due to network/firewall conditions. In the past, using VPNs, guest wifi networks, or connecting from some countries have been the cause. Students should be directed to use a different wifi network or reach out to eClass support for further troubleshooting. If on a UofA campus, students should always connect to UWS to avoid troubles.
