Re-using Database Activity Entries From Past Courses
Last modified on 04 July 2023 02:08 PM

Through the normal course content copy procedures, student and instructor contributions into the database activity are not copied forward from year to year.

These submissions are considered user data and for that reason are excluded from the regular routines. If you require entries in a database to be copied forward into a new term's course, you need to use the activity's Export/Import Entries functions. This process is detailed below:

  1. Enter the previous term's course and access the database activity.

    locating the database activity

  2. On the database page, click on the 'Actions' dropdown menu at right, then select Export entries.

export entries command under actions menu

  3. De-select 'Include user details'. Then, click on Export entries and take note of the file location.

deselect the option that reads "include user details"

  4. Now enter the new course where you want the entries to appear. On the new database page, Select  Actions >> Import entries.

select "import entries" from the actions menu

  5. Click Choose a file then navigate to the file produced in step 3 (or drag the file into the uploader area).

click on the "choose a file" button, then submit

  6. Leave the options untouched and click Submit.

Now your database will include all of the previous entries. These will all be attributed to you so no student data will be inappropriately visible to new students.

Notes

  • Along with entry data, database Presets may be downloaded locally as a zip and imported into a new course. If you are using eClass' standard course creation content copying process, this will not usually be required because all of your old database setup presets will already be copied into your new course.
  • The field names in the top row of the CSV file must match exactly the names of the fields in database activity and are case sensitive. It is best to not edit the exported file in any way.
  • User uploaded files and pictures are lost in this process.
