Restricting Access to An Activity or Resource

In some cases, you may wish to set conditions which limit whether a student can access a resource, activity, or an entire topic or section based on any of number of different criteria, including time range, grade range achieved on previous activity, user information, group membership, or by accessing/completing another activity.


To Set up a restriction:

1. Make sure to activate Edit mode in the upper right corner of your course page.

2. Click on the three-dot icon (⋮), then on Edit settings to the right of the activity you would like to restrict access to (or conditionally release)

3. Scroll down to the 'Restrict access' section.

4. To add any restriction criteria, click the Add restriction button.

A display will open with all the possible criteria you can select from:

Restrict availability based on completion of previous activity:

To restrict the availability of an item on eClass based on the completion of another item, completion tracking must be enabled in your course. This sets up the possibility of having certain activities counted as complete. To see a more detailed description of how to do this, see the article Completion Tracking.

Once completion tracking is enabled, you can then restrict access to items based on whether any other item is marked as complete:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on Activity completion.
  3. Toggling the eyeball icon (stroke through) to hide the activity completely will hide it from students until the prior activity is complete. If not hidden it will show greyed- out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. Select the activity/resource that must be marked complete. Previous activity with completion" can be selected rather than a specific activity. This can be used to avoid breaking the access restriction if an activity is removed or modified.  
  5. Select the operator for completeness:
    • must be marked complete
    • must not be marked complete
    • must be marked complete with pass grade
    • must be marked complete with fail grade

**The same basic options in the screenshot above exist for all the different types of access restrictions listed below.

Restrict availability by date:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on Date.
  3. Toggle the eyeball icon to either hide the item completely or show it greyed out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. Select the date and times you would like the resource to be available in the drop-down menu
  • Note that times are based on the 24-hour clock.

Restrict availability by grade:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on Grade.
  3. Toggle the eyeball icon to either hide the item completely or show it greyed out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. Enter the grade type and grade range for the activity that a student must attain in order to gain access to the current resource.

Restrict availability by group:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on Group.
  3. Toggle the eyeball icon to either hide the item completely or show it greyed out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. Select the group to limit that item to.

Restrict availability by grouping:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on Grouping.
  3. Toggle the eyeball icon to either hide the item completely or show it greyed out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. Select the grouping to limit that item to.

Restrict availability by user field:

  1. Click on Add restriction... button.
  2. Click on User profile.
  3. Toggle the eyeball icon to either hide the item completely or show it greyed out with the restriction criteria listed.
  4. In the first field beside 'User profile field', specify a field that can uniquely identify a user in your course (most often the CCID).
  5. Change the operator to 'Contains' or 'Doesn't contain' etc., depending on your needs.
  6. Enter the student's unique identifier in the last box.
  7. If you need to open the resource or activity to a number of individual users, change the 'match' dropdown to 'any' as no user will have more than one CCID for example:

8. If you are setting this restriction for a large number of students, you would be better served to set up groups and groupings to selectively release the material.
