Anonymous Submissions (Blind Marking) in Assignments
Last modified on 05 July 2023 07:21 PM

Anonymous submissions, or blind marking, allow instructors to mark assignments without knowing which student they are marking. Anonymous submissions are a practical way to ensure that personal biases have a minimal impact on students' grades.

In order for submissions to remain anonymous, students must be instructed to use their student IDs on their assignment documents and not their names.

To enable anonymous submissions:

  1. Turn on Edit mode at the top right corner of your class page
  2. Click on the 3-dot dropdown to the right of the assignment and select 'Edit settings'
  3. In your Assignment settings, scroll down to the 'Grade' option and select Yes for the 'Anonymous submissions' option.
  4. Save your changes and return to the main course page.

To grade assignments using anonymous submissions:

  1. Click on the assignment and select View all submissions.

  2. The "Identifier" column in the Gradebook now displays random numbers in place of student names:

To release grade to students using anonymous submissions:

  1. From the assignment's 'Grading summary' page, click on View all submissions.

  2. At the top left of the page, from the 'Grading action' drop-down menu, select Reveal student identities.
