Using an Existing Rubric as a Template
Last modified on 18 August 2025 03:19 PM
NOTICE: Please be advised that the content of this article may only be relevant for users concluding the final stages of course work on eClass or for users on the eClass External system. The eClass Learning Management System is currently in a read-only state that prohibits new courses, enrollments, and users from being added to the site. Credit courses and co-curricular courses at the UofA are now being delivered on Canvas, and full articles on how to use Canvas can be found here.

This article will explain how to re-use an existing rubric that you have already created in one eClass assignment for grading a different assignment.

First, we will need to create a template from an already existing rubric. If you do not have a rubric, please see the following article in order to make one: Using Rubrics.

To use an existing rubric for another assignment:

  1. First, click on the assignment.

  2. On the assignment's Grading summary page, click on the Advanced grading tab on the top panel.

  3. You will be taken to a new page. On the top of the page. there will be a drop-down menu box. Select Rubric as the option from the list. Then, click on Create new grading form from a template.

  4. On the new page, there will be a search function that will allow you to find any of your own existing rubrics. Type in the name of the rubric here. Please ensure you click on the check box "include my own forms".

  5. A list of all the rubrics you created should appear. When you find the rubric, click on Use this form as a template.

  6. Then, click on Continue and you are done.

You can now use your previously created rubric for your current assignment.
