Printing Canvas Quizzes
Last modified on 13 November 2024 11:17 AM

Quiz activities on Canvas may be printed for students who require a paper option for test taking. The recommended New Quizzes on Canvas has options for printing a blank quiz as well as one with an answer key. Printing on Classic Quizzes is limited to a rudimentary browser command procedure involved in the printing process.

Printing New Quizzes

This function is found when accessing a Quiz activity's Build page. There will be a choice of type-size for accessibility considerations and then will prompt users to save or print the quiz.

Printing Classic Quizzes

Classic Quizzes do not have any in-system printing functions built in it. Users can only go to the Classic Quiz and preview the list of questions, then use their browser print functions to print what is available on screen.

The following guide provides and illustration of this: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Troubleshooting/Printing-quizzes-from-Canvas/ta-p/841

Quiz and question-type considerations

  • Instructors can print and provide exams to Alternate Format Services for exams in formats including e-text, large print, Braille, and audio, which can subsequently be hosted and provided to the student.
  • Quizzes should be previewed and revised for legibility.
    • Questions containing audio or video will not convert to paper. Alternate versions of those questions quiz should be built as an alternative if a printed format is required.
    • Questions containing colour images should be reviewed for readability if printing a black-and-white/greyscale version for students.
    • Quiz questions that are vertically tall on screen, may result in a single question spanning several pages when printed, which may be cumbersome for students.
    • The print function for New Quizzes is a slightly modified browser-print function and will generally produce a result similar to a manual browser-print action. As a result, some question types may look unusual on paper such as:
      • Matching, Fill in the blank, Ordering - Drag and drop, or dropdown menus will appear
      • Some multiple choice - depending on question setting will show "Clear my selection"
      • Essay response questions will provide a box to write in, but may not be enough space for a handwritten attempt.
    • Printed exams are ideal for simple multiple-choice/answer, and true-false questions.
