Using the Built-in Notebook on Canvas Pages (Students)
Last modified on 17 August 2026 07:15 PM

When viewing Pages created by your instructor, students can collect notes using the Notebook feature.

Students can highlight any text on a course page, mark it as Unclear or Important, and annotate it for future reference. Marking text this way creates personal links to items on the page if you need to return to them for review.

Note: The Notebook feature is available only in pages created inside Canvas and is not available in external pages, assignments, quizzes, or discussions. It will not be available in course content that consists of PDFs, documents, or PowerPoint slides.

Access to the Notebook will appear as an icon at the top of the page:

The first time you click on the Notebook button in a course, you will see a brief explanation of the feature:

The next time you access the Notebook in the same course, you won't see the information panel.

With the Notebook active on a page, you can highlight text and see a pop-up that allows you to mark the text as unclear or important:

Once you have marked the text, you can add and Save your own comment:

By clicking on the label Important or Unclear, you can change the label from Important to Unclear or from Unclear to Important:

Clicking a note takes you back to the location on the page where you noted it.

You can also use the Filter dropdown to filter by All notes, Important notes, and Unclear notes.
