Student Problems when Viewing their Grades

If your students are having difficulty accessing their grades, it may be one of the following issues:

 

The Gradebook is hidden from students

If a student is unable to access ANY grades (i.e., the Grades link is unavailable to them), it is likely that the setting to show the gradebook to students has been disabled.

  1. To enable student access to the gradebook, click on the Settings tab at the top of your course main page.
  2. Scroll down to the item 'Show students their own grades' (under the Appearance heading), and change the value to Yes.

Conventionally, no student will ever see grade data for anyone but themselves. Only Instructor-level roles will have access to the grades of participants in a course.

 

The Course Total Grade is hidden from students gradebook

By default the course total grade is hidden from students. To allow students to see their overall grade in the course, you must turn it on.

To configure the gradebook:

  1. Go to the Grade administration page by clicking on Grades tab at the top of your course main page.



  2. Then select Grader report then Gradebook setup.



  3. Click on Edit > Edit settings beside your course's name.



  4. Here you can set the grade type and the Grade display type, which is what students see in their gradebook.



The missing grade item may be hidden in the gradebook

If students can access the gradebook, but cannot see a specific grade item, this may be because that item is currently hidden from students in the gradebook.
To show these items follow the steps below:

  1. Click on the Grades tab at the top of your course main page, then select Grader report then Gradebook setup.
  2. Find the affected grade item on the page, and check the icons in the dialog after clicking on Edit.
    • If you see an icon of a closed eye, this means that that item is currently hidden to students. Hidden items are displayed to the instructor with greyed out text, as shown below.
  3. To show this item to students, click on the closed eye icon to ‘Show’ it.
