NOTICE: Please be advised that the content of this article may only be relevant for users concluding the final stages of course work on eClass or for users on the eClass External system. The eClass Learning Management System is currently in a read-only state that prohibits new courses, enrollments, and users from being added to the site. Credit courses and co-curricular courses at the UofA are now being delivered on Canvas, and full articles on how to use Canvas can be found here.

Instructors may use the built-in tool within Forum activities that allows them to look up a report of student activity.

To view the Forum Summary Report:

  1. Go to the Forum
  2. Click on the Reports tab at the top of that page
  3. This will take you to the Forum summary report

Note: This may take a minute or longer depending on the complexity and size of the forum.

The 'Forum summary report' includes a wide range of data about the activity of each user in the forum:

  • First name / Surname
  • Number of discussions posted
  • Number of replies posted
  • Number of attachments
  • Number of views
  • Word count
  • Character count
  • Earliest post
  • Most recent post
  • Export posts (per user or using other conditions)
  • Including data for 'All forums in course'

Users are able to filter by Date or by Groups (if a group mode has been set up in the forum).

Clicking on Export will give you options for a more detailed breakdown. You can narrow it to:

  • a combination of users
  • a combination of discussions
  • date range

You may also specify what format it is to be downloaded as:

  • Comma separated values (.csv)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
  • HTML table
  • Javascript Object Notation (.json)
  • OpenDocument (.ods)
  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)

To improve legibility, the Export options allow the data to be customized and remove any HTML and/or alter the dates to a more conventional format. Depending on how you intend to use the data, (ie. if performing further analysis in a separate statistics program), instructors may wish to leave the Export options at their defaults.

Note: The table data for the Summary Report may also be downloaded in the same formats as described above.
