Working with Videos in Canvas
Last modified on 18 September 2024 04:47 PM

This article outlines the best practices for working with videos in Canvas and contains recommendations for when to use the main 2 centrally-supported tools, Canvas Studio and YuJa Enterprise Video. Guides for using these tools are here: YuJa | Canvas Studio.

Important note: It is not recommended to upload videos as files directly in Canvas (eg, to the "Files" section or as an attached document in a text area), as there is a fixed storage limit of 2GB for all course files and single-file limit of 500 MB per file. Instructors should instead either use either central streaming solution depending on their use case.

Recommendations for specific use cases

The chart below identifies the recommended streaming solution depending on particular use cases.

Instructors can also embed videos from sites such as YouTube or Vimeo using html embed code and the embed button content areas in Canvas. For videos hosted on YouTube, however, it's preferable to import them to your Studio or Yuja library as this will prevent advertisements from playing and allow you to make full use of the interactive features in these platforms.

Content added to one system can easily be downloaded and loaded into the other, so both can be used depending on your use case. The key features and differences between the two systems are described below.

As an instructor I want to... Recommended solution
Record lectures on a classroom computer Yuja - Podium computers are already configured and tested with the Yuja Software. Studio will also work, using the in-browser capture tools, but Yuja is the recommended solution, see the pros/cons tables below
Issue a video quiz to students Either - video quiz features are comparable between the two
Upload content that works in the existing eClass system, including eClass External Yuja - it should be noted, however, that public links to videos can be generated in Studio and linked from the eClass environment
Track student engagement with videos Studio - Yuja can also provide thorough reports but they aren't as readily accessible. Posting a studio video to a course provides a simple breakdown of which students have viewed a video and how much they've watched.
Receive video submissions from students for an assignment Studio - will be the only option available to students if the only submission type selected is "Media Recordings". Students do have equal access to Yuja, but will need to sign in separately at https://ualberta.yuja.com in order to add content, and can only post via text input boxes.
Allow students to comment on videos and have comments visible to other students Studio - has better integration for these types of functions
Automatically retrieve and preserve Zoom lectures Yuja - This feature is not currently supported in our implementation of Canvas Studio.

Yuja Features

Yuja is our recommended platform for lecture recording and long term storage of large libraries. Yuja also has the benefit of complete interoperability with the existing eClass system, and will allow for more seamless transfer of content.

Pros Cons
  • Storage quota of 150GB should provide sufficient storage for most uses
  • No limit on the size of video files uploaded
  • Automatic uploading of Zoom cloud recordings
  • Robust features in built in editor including greater flexibility for caption editing and correction
  • Better lecture recording capability in classrooms, including capture of partial recordings if computer is restarted or powered off
  • Imported YouTube videos can be edited, annotated, etc. and are saved as separate copies, so that they won't be affected by URL changes or deletion from YouTube Note: Yuja can no longer copy youtube videos due to changes made to the site by Google
  • More security options - users can opt to share videos only with users from the University of Alberta
  • Yuja videos don't display in the Canvas student app directly, they link to either a mobile browser or the Yuja app (if installed)
  • Some features, like analytics, require leaving the Canvas environment and signing into the Yuja site or using the Yuja course link
  • No inline commenting system for students

Canvas Studio Features

Studio is our recommended solution for quiz video additions to courses or instances where we intend that students interact heavily with videos.

Pros Cons
  • More closely integrated with Canvas environment - Interactive comment system, insights/analytics available on the same page videos are posted
  • Users can create sharing groups - videos can be shared with an entire group, granting access to other instructors and course admins to copy, edit, and repost videos
  • No storage quotas currently, although they could be implemented if the University reaches capacity
  • Automatic uploading of Zoom recordings is not supported
  • Less robust software for desktop capture
  • Very limited editing and captioning features (we would still recommend using a standalone desktop application for sophisticated editing capabilities in either case)
  • Limited security options - videos can only be shared publicly or with specific canvas users and groups
