Canvas courses with very large enrollments can be challenging to manage but there are a number of features available to make this task easier. This article outlines the different options in the various areas of Canvas to assist instructors.

Assignments, Quizzes, and Graded Discussions

In assignments, quizzes, and graded discussions, the Assign to interface enables you to assign different times to the entire class, individual students, or whole sections, with settings that apply exclusively to each. For example, a setting for a student overrides the setting for the whole class.

If you have a combined course of undergraduate and graduate sections, use filters in separate assignments to hide some assignments from each section. 

Student Groups can be assigned times and dates only if the activity is a group activity. See Using Groups in Canvas.

To assign time and date settings, click the dropdown menu under Assign To*:

Gradebook

In the Gradebook, click on the Apply Filters button to see a list of the possible filters for the gradebook:

Filtered groups can be added one at a time if you wish to view one or multiple groups.

The following are the filter contents:

• Sections: filter by course sections.
• Modules: filter by items in the Modules tab.
• Assignment Groups: filter by groups in the Assignments tab.
• Student Groups: filter by student groups defined under the People tab.
• Status: filter by activities, whether they are late, missing, resubmitted, dropped, or excused.
• Submissions: whether students have submissions, ungraded submissions, no submissions, and unposted grades.
• Start & End Date: Enter a date range to view

SpeedGrader

In SpeedGrader, click the dropdown beside a student's name then select Showing All Sections, to select a course section to filter by:

Announcements

When posting announcements, the Post to section can be filtered by course sections by clicking in the dropdown under "Post to":
