Canvas New Quizzes have important Settings distinct from the basic assignment settings in the quiz, such as the number of points, the grade display, and the Assignment To settings for scheduling quiz attempts.

All Settings can be adjusted by instructors and TAs, and they save automatically when changes are made.

If students have already taken a quiz, a cautionary message will appear when instructors access the Settings page.

Access New Quizzes Settings

To access New Quizzes Settings, click on the three dots to the right of the quiz name under Quizzes or Assignments, and select Build:

You may also click on the quiz name anywhere it appears and scroll to the bottom right to select the Build button:

To see the Settings options, click on the Settings tab at the top of the Build page:

Shuffle questions and answers

The first two settings allow you to shuffle the order in which the questions are presented to students, and to shuffle the order in which answer choices are presented in multiple-choice type questions:

If all students take the exam at the same time, shuffling the order of questions will help prevent, however minimally, collaboration between students taking the quiz.

Note: Be careful when shuffling the order of answer choices. If you have choices like "Both A and B" or "All of the above," answers could be shuffled into position A or B for example. If the option to Shuffle Choices is available to be checked when setting up or editing a question, you can click the lock icon to lock the question in its position:

One question at a time

You have the option to show all questions on one long page or to show one question at a time:

Checking "Allow Backtracking" lets students return to a question to modify an answer.

Require a student access code

You can set a password to prevent access to a quiz until you share the password with students. Some proctoring software, such as Smart Exam Monitor, can show students the password once they have completed setup.

If you can't remember the password, checking "Show access code" will reveal the password to instructors and TAs only:

Time limit

If you use the Assign To setting in the initial setup to allow a broad window of several hours, you can still restrict the amount of time allowed to students to complete a quiz:

Note: This, and not the Assign To time, is the time that is overridden by Accommodations and Moderation times. When you have time accommodations, the Assign To time must be extended either individually with an additional setting or long enough to cover the longest accommodation.

Detect Multiple Sessions

When Detect Multiple Sessions is activated, a student's completed quiz attempt will record an entry whenever a student stops viewing the quiz for more than 30 seconds, switches to another browser session, or views the quiz on another device. The entries can be viewed in the View Log link in the New Quizzes Moderation tab.

Note: Multiple sessions may be recorded if a student reopens a quiz after their system freezes, if their network session is interrupted, or if they need to resume the quiz on another device. Records of multiple sessions are not a reliable indication of misconduct.

Filter IP addresses

Restricting quiz access to specific IP address ranges is typically used for students whose exams have been booked in the Learning Assessment Centre:

IP address restrictions may also be used to ensure that students are taking their exam in a specific classroom. For more information, contact the Learning Spaces team well in advance of the quiz time via the IT Service Desk at +1 780 492 8000.

Allow Calculator

You can allow a built-in calculator in a quiz. You can choose between a Basic and a Scientific calculator:

The calculator will appear at the top of a question or the top of the quiz, depending on whether you have activated "One question at a time" (above):

Allow clearing selection (Multiple Choice)

If students are in doubt about their answers in a multiple-choice question, it will be to their advantage if they can clear their answer choice until they are ready to select a choice before submitting their quiz:

Show custom feedback with results

You can add a standard feedback message to students when they submit their quiz attempt:

Editor default font

You can change the default font to standardize the font for all questions in a quiz:

Changing the default font in Canvas New Quizzes automatically applies your selected font and size across all Rich Content Editors within that specific quiz. It streamlines quiz creation by giving all questions, instructions, and feedback a consistent look, without affecting content where you have already applied a custom, individual font.

Disable Document Uploads

Disable Document Uploads prevents students from uploading files into the editor in essay questions:

Allow multiple attempts

If you allow multiple attempts to a quiz, you can set the Allowed attempts to "Unlimited" (default) or "Limited." If you select Limited, you can specify the number of attempts:

You can set the score to keep to Highest, Average, Latest, or First.

You can set the score to keep to Highest, Average, Latest, or First.

You can set a waiting period in days, hours, and minutes before a subsequent attempt is allowed.

If you choose "Enable build on last attempt," correctly answered questions will be hidden from subsequent attempts.

Hide results from students

If you have not set a Grade Posting Policy in your course, Canvas will, by default, release quiz grades to students as soon as their attempt is graded.

You can, however, choose to Hide results from students:

When you are ready to post grades, and with Hide results activated, you can turn on the settings to show students the points possible and the points awarded for the quiz.

With Hide results activated, there are more settings to customize how results are displayed to students:

1. Show students their responses.
2. Restrict the dates that students can see their responses
3. Show students whether their responses are correct or incorrect
4. Show students the correct answer to questions
5. Show correct or incorrect answers only after their last attempt
6. Restrict the dates that students can see their responses as correct or incorrect
