RESOLVED November 7th, 3PM: After thorough testing, the vendor triggered the data fix at 2PM this afternoon. We have validated that the Canvas grades for student's STACK assignments have been restored to their previous values. UPDATE November 6th, 6PM: We had a productive meeting with the vendor today and together identified the source of some false-positive data in the query. We will complete one more round of testing tomorrow and should be able to restore all changed grades to their correct values. UPDATE November 5th, 8AM: Yesterday the vendor was able to create a query that identified additional grades that had been changed but not yet corrected. They have written a script to repair these and are going to test this against a fresh copy of the production database before applying it. UPDATE November 3rd, 5PM: The vendor has reported that the fix has been applied for most grades. We have submitted some instances where the grades have not updated for deeper investigation. Attention Canvas STACK instructors, We have been in contact with many of you directly but also wanted to make a broader communication about the problems with incorrect grades being reported for student’s STACK homework attempts. We reported this issue to the STACK vendor Wednesday October 29th at 5PM and at 9PM they identified the problem: In preparation for an upcoming system upgrade, their hosting team created a clone of the server from a data snapshot taken on September 20th, 2025. This staging server carried over the production LTI configuration and began pushing new student grades that corresponded to what those students had saved as of September 20th, 2025 into Canvas. Only students and assignments where the grades were different got updated. The configuration problem has been repaired and we have been working with the vendor since Wednesday to get the current correct (highest) scores pushed back to Canvas for the affected students. The vendor has identified a workflow that will perform this repair and will be testing and implementing it on Monday. This fix will restore all student scores to the correct values. Unfortunately the only mechanism to do this in Canvas will record the correct score as a new attempt on the assignment so for anyone who had their grade changed, the gradebook cell will show the late indicator. If any instructors use the ‘Automatically apply deduction to late submissions’ canvas gradebook feature, they will need to manually correct scores that are incorrectly penalized for being late by this process. It is possible to validate the sequence of a student’s submissions by accessing their specific assignment in Speedgrader using these instructions, and then opening the submission history near the top right:
Our apologies for this issue - we will report back on Monday with any additional information required. Please let us know if you have any questions.
