Adding YuJa Videos into Content Areas of Canvas
Last modified on 06 September 2024 03:58 PM

This article outlines how YuJa videos can be added through the standard Canvas rich content editor (RCE) available in most content areas in the system.

  • For instructors, common spots for adding media would include quiz instructions and questions, discussions, assignments, and pages.
  • For students, media would most commonly be added to discussion posts or in assignments requiring online text submissions

This article will show the process from a student's point of view when adding a video to an assignment, but the process is common to all of the different content entry locations.

When adding video content into Canvas, instructors should review the recommendations for the different streaming media services available based on their particular use case. Please be aware that when choosing Media Recordings as the Submission Type in an assignment, Canvas will default to the Canvas Studio streaming application so assignments must be configured slightly differently to use YuJa.

Example: Adding a video to an RCE content area

To add YuJa videos to an assignment in the Rich Content Editor (RCE), click the three dots at the left of the assignment submission box to expand the additional rows of icons, then select 'YuJa Media':

Uploading media:

When a student first accesses YuJa, no media will be available to select, so they should select Upload media or Record content:

choose upload media or record content

It is possible to drag-and-drop or browse to upload existing video files. Once selected, these will appear in a progress bar below the uploader while they are in progress:

Drag and drop or browes to upload media

Recording media:

Students can record content if they do not have their own media content to add.

To record, students should download the YuJa desktop capture application. They should select the desktop recording option (browser recording is recommended only if a user is working on a machine that can not have the desktop capture application installed):

Once launched, the capture application allows users to select the video, audio, and screen feeds:

select what to record: video, microphone, screen

More information on recording videos in YuJa can be found in Recording Videos Using YuJa and on the YuJa support portal.

Adding media to a course:

Once they upload or record a video, students must re-launch the Yuja Media Chooser from the assignment submission interface. They should now see the media they have added which can then be selected and inserted:

Note: the procedure for adding content to an activity description is the same as adding to an assignment.

select and insert media

Once the YuJa video title appears in the discussion topic content area, it can be posted into a discussion or assignment by clicking Insert Content.

The resulting Assignment will be ready to submit the video stored by YuJa:
