Quizzes - Question Types

The following is a summary of the question types available on eClass for use in quizzes:

  • All-or-nothing Multiple choice: Allows the selection of multiple responses from a pre-defined list of choices but uses all-or-nothing grading (100% or 0%). For more information, review Multiple Choice Quiz Question Settings article

  • Calculated: The student is required to enter a numerical value (and units if required) in the text field provided. This question type allows instructors to randomize numerical question delivery to students through the use of wildcard formula variables. Every time the quiz is taken, the question variables are changed based on a data set created within the question so that a new question is presented to each student. See the article Adding Calculated Quiz Questions for more details.
  • Calculated multichoice: Like multichoice questions which have choice elements that can include formula results from numeric values that are selected randomly from a set when the quiz is taken.
  • Calculated simple: A simpler version of calculated questions which are like numerical questions but with the numbers used selected randomly from a set when the quiz is taken.

  • Drag and drop into text: Missing words in some text are filled in using drag-and-drop. This question type stores previous question settings to save time when adding questions.

  • Drag and Drop Markers: Markers (like pins) are dragged and dropped anywhere onto an uploaded background image.

  • Drag and Drop onto image: Images or text labels are dragged and dropped into specifically marked drop zones on an uploaded background image.

  • Embedded answers (Cloze): Cloze questions allow you to create embedded short answer questions and multiple choice questions and are the equivalent of a ‘fill-in-the-blank’ question type. The creation of these question types requires special codes that are discussed in the article Cloze Quiz Question SettingsWith this question type, you can create multiple sub-questions, which all contribute to an overall question grade.
  • Essay: In response to a question, students type out a paragraph response in the provided text area. It is also possible to let students upload file(s) as their response to an essay-type question. Essay quiz questions are the only question type that requires instructors to manually grade students’ responses. Instructors can limit the file attachment size within an essay question. The file size maximum can be as low as 10KB or as high as 400MB. Quiz essay questions can now have soft-limit (click link for further details) maximum and minimum word count limits applied.
  • Matching: The student is required to "match" a series of static questions with their corresponding answers, which are provided in a randomized list. At least two questions and three answers must be provided; additional ‘incorrect’ matches may be given by providing an answer with a blank question. Each match is equally weighted to contribute towards the grade for the total question.
    • Matching questions can only deliver plain text answers - it is not possible to reliably display complex mathematical notations via MathJAX as the answer choices.
    • If a matching question needs to be revised, please note that adding or removing answer choice variants will result in a "Deleted Choice" display bug that students will see once the quiz is regraded.
    • If answers need to be revised, we recommend that you maintain the same matching choices: For example (original) A, B, C -- (revised to) C, B, A will work fine.
    • But, if (original) A, B, C is changed to A, B only, or A, B, C, D, the "Deleted Choice" bug will occur. If you do this by accident, manually changing the choices back to how they were will restore the answers and get rid of the "Deleted Choice" issue.

  • Medical Calculated: An extended version of calculated questions which does not display trailing zeros.

  • Multiple choice: The student chooses their response from a list of pre-defined options with the option to visually strike out any answers they have eliminated from contention. You may choose to set up a multiple-choice question that only allows one correct answer, or that has multiple correct answers allowed. If you allow only one answer, at least one choice must be worth 100%; if allowing multiple answers, all positive grades must add up to 100%. This question type now stores previous question settings to save time when adding questions (see below for more details).

  • Music Theory: Enables the creation of several types of music theory exercises.

  • Numerical: Students enter a numerical value in the text field provided. There may be several possible correct answers with different grades, but at least one answer must be worth 100%. Possible answers may also accept a margin of error. As with the short-answer question type, the order in which possible answers are presented on the settings screen is important, as student responses are compared against them in the order they appear. When a match is found, the evaluation process stops, and the student is assigned the corresponding grade.
  • Random short-answer matching: Like a Matching question, but created randomly from the short answer questions in a particular category.

  • Short answer: In response to a question, students type out a word or short phrase in the provided text box. There may be several possible correct answers with different grades, but at least one answer must be worth 100%. In the question set-up screen, the order in which these possible answers are presented is important, as student responses are compared against them in the order they appear. When a match is found, the evaluation process stops, and the student is assigned the corresponding grade. Answers may or may not be set up to be case-sensitive, and the wildcard symbol (*) may be used in possible answers to match any series of characters. This question type now stores previous question settings to save time when adding questions (see below for more details).

  • STACK: STACK questions provide mathematical questions for the eClass quiz. These use a computer algebra system to establish the mathematical properties of the student's responses.

    This question type was piloted by the Department of Math before being added to eClass, and they have developed support resources for question construction. Please contact George Peschke (gepe@ualberta.ca) for more information.

  • True/False: Students respond to a question by indicating that the statement is either ‘true’ or ‘false’.

  • Description: Not actually a question. Used to add instructions, a rubric, or other content to the activity. See this example.

 

Stored question settings 

To save time when building quiz questions, the following question types now store the last saved question's settings which get re-used when creating the next one of that question type:

  • Multiple choice
  • Short answer
  • Drag and drop into text
