Attention eClass Users,

UPDATE: The maintenance outage today (Dec. 28th) has been completed early and access to eClass was restored at 4:35PM.

As a result of today's testing, eClass will require a full database vacuum. This will be performed from Wednesday Dec. 29th 3:00PM - Thursday Dec. 30 8:00AM (17 hours). eClass will be unavailable through this time range so users should attempt to access outside this window. We apologize for these continued interruptions.

-----------

Please be aware that there will be a series of maintenance windows for eClass over the holiday period to prepare eClass for the start of Winter term. These outages will be held in the following windows:

  • Tuesday Dec. 28th - 12:00PM (Noon) - 6:00PM
  • Wednesday Dec. 29th - 3:00PM - Thursday Dec. 30th 8:00AM
  • Friday Dec. 31st - 12:00AM (Midnight) - 6:00AM

eClass may be unavailable for the duration of these maintenance windows. We strongly recommend that users complete any necessary or urgent work in eClass outside of these windows.

We understand that timelines are tight for many users who are preparing for a fully online term and we are doing our utmost to ensure that the system is available and reliable for the start of Winter term. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Happy holidays to you all,

IST eClass Support

Update on eClass Outages
Posted by Chris Goetz on 24 December 2021 09:19 AM

To all eClass users,

Over the past two weeks we have had untimely and impactful interruptions in eClass and some of the related tools that eClass provides. The interruptions on December 7th and 15th were caused by outages in Amazon Web Services (East and West Zones) ; those interruptions were outside of our control. However, the outages on the 20th, 21st and 22nd were within our scope.

We understand that these outages have caused a lot of unnecessary and added stress and extra work resulting in frustration and anger for our instructors, students, and staff. For that we are deeply sorry. We are also aware that an apology brings little solace to those that were impacted but one is absolutely required regardless.

The outages that eClass has experienced this week are the result of complex issues that do not have a readily apparent root cause and continue to be under investigation. What we do know is that prior to the exams starting, a load on the database triggered the eClass database to fail but this only happened during the afternoon sessions. The root cause is not evident in the logs or in our tests and similar (and higher) database loads at different intervals of the exam period did not cause loss of service. The teams in IST are continuing to work on and investigate the issue and outside vendors have been engaged to help with the diagnosis and resolution of this issue.

With the start of term for Winter 2022 moving fully online, we understand how important it is for eClass to be a reliable platform for online delivery. Our teams will continue to work to restore the reliability of eClass in preparation for the start of term and exam periods in the months to come.

Regards,

IST eClass Support

YuJa SSO and Default Video Security Changes
Posted by Chris Goetz on 23 December 2021 03:12 PM

Attention eClass YuJa users,

In advance of the Winter 2022 term, we will be linking the YuJa Enterprise Media platform to the U of A’s standard single-sign-on (SSO) service. This will allow instructors and students outside eClass to access and use the service by signing in directly instead of passing across from courses within the LMS.

In addition, this change allows us to switch the default site security settings from ‘Private’ to ‘Public with U of A Authentication’. This change will improve a number of YuJa workflows and still allow CCID protection for videos.

Instructors can still increase the security level of their videos to ‘Private’ if they need to by clicking More from a video tile, scrolling to the Links section, and toggling Security to Private. This process is described in detail here.

Note that this change will only affect new videos uploaded into YuJa. Instructors will need to switch the video permissions on any previously uploaded videos if this is required.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this change.

Regards,
IST eClass Support
