Attention Canvas Instructors,

As we launch the first term delivered fully on Canvas, we have a number of important updates across the Digital Learning Environment for instructors to be aware of.

New in Canvas for Fall 2025

A number of important new features are now available in Canvas:

  • Differentiation Tags: Instructors can now group their students into functional units that can be used to filter the gradebook, student lists, and provide a mechanism to provide different due dates on assessments for these tagged students. These are separate from course groups.
  • SensusAccess Accessibility File Converter: This revamped integration of SensusAccess allows every Canvas user to request accessible format versions of certain types of Canvas activities, content, and files.
  • FeedbackFruits Peer Review Tool: Selected via RFP in summer 2025, the FeedbackFruits Peer Review tools creates structured assignments for students to evaluate and comment on each other’s work.
  • Student Accommodation Dashboard: This custom-built tool that pulls data from the new Accomodate system used by the Academic Success Center to manage accommodations. This first version of the dashboard displays all student-registered exam accommodations in a course.
  • Bulk Feedback Upload Tool: Instructors can use this custom tool to bulk upload text comments into the Canvas gradebook.

Canvas Resources for Fall 2025

For the many instructors who are teaching with Canvas for the very first time, we recommend reviewing the following resources:

Instructors migrating quizzes from eClass to Canvas should also be aware of the latest tips to ensure a smooth transition.

All Canvas users should also take note that any email notifications from our new LMS will be sent from an external email domain, notifications@instructure.com. These are legitimate emails and users can configure their personal notifications settings as desired should they wish to modify the amount of email they receive from Canvas.

For more information about any of these changes or for support with your transition to Canvas, please email us at eclass@ualberta.ca or call us at 780-492-9372.

Regards,
